Competency-based education (CBE) chatter has been on the rise the last few years. The approach to learning, long advocated and implemented by Western Governors University (WGU) is now spreading it’s wings and touching a growing number of institutions.

For those who aren’t deep into CBE, or who want a quick refresher, CBE programs often cover five approved design principles:

  1. Degrees/certificates reflect robust, and valid, competencies
  2. Student are able to learn at their own pace, and are appropriately supported
  3. Effective learning resources are always available
  4. CBE courses make explicit the links between competencies, courses, assessments and learning outcomes
  5. Rigorous assessments that are secure and reliable

Students at Sinclair Community College, Austin Community College and Broward College – the three institutions covered in the survey – generally agreed on the following five benefits of CBE programs.  From the article:

  1. Learning at their own pace
  2. Affordability
  3. Flexible course start dates
  4. Support provided by programs
  5. Direct connections between CBE programs and workforce opportunities

At Junction, we’re working with leading institutions to develop and scale CBE programs today.  If it’s an area of interest, drop us a line for a quick exploratory discussion.
